Plagiarism

In all honesty, who gets hurt when I plagiarize?

Explore either side of the plagiarism argument: a) It is a serious issue. b) It is not a serious issue.

When you plagiarize, the only person you hurt is yourself. You receive the 0, you get a call home, you get the dissapointed look from your parents, and you get what ever punishment they give. Not only that, but you also lose the respect and trust of your teachers. You will be known as "That kid who plagiarized" not a hard-working student like you really are. There is never a good reason to plagiarize. Also, with turnitin.com, you will get caught, so its not worth trying. Plagiarism is a bigger, more serious problem than it seems.

I think that plagiarism is a serious issue because it is basically taking credit for someone else's work. Let's say you have a paper due tomorrow but you haven't started it yet and you really don't feel like doing it. So, all you do is just go to a site, copy the work, and hand it in. You just took someone's work and claimed that it was written by you. It is not fair to the person you just copied from, because they took the time and effort to write the information, and in 30 seconds you copy it and say that it was all done by you.
You are really only hurting yourself because if/when you get caught, your teacher is going to give you a zero for the assignment for being dishonest and cheating. Instead, you could have tried your best and completed as much of the paper as you could have and recieved a 50 instead of a zero. With the technology we have today, your teachers will catch you one way or another, so don't even waste your time trying.

Plagarism is an extremely serious issue. Not only do you get a bad grade and a call home, but you're also not learning anything. If the only thing this generation learns is how to right click, then click copy then paste, our future will not be bright. We will not be as succesful in life as someone who did their work and learned new skilss and facts along the way. Besides there is every possibility that you will get caught so don't try.

Plagiarism is not just some small thing we don't need to worry about. Morally, plagiarism is wrong. In the end you are the one who winds up getting hurt and punished. You are not only hurting your grade but your self confidence. People plagiarize because they either don't have the time or because they don't feel like trying. When you don't put any effort into something you are only doing yourself a disservice.
Besides there is nothing better than the feeling of finishing an essay or assignment that you wrote all by yourself. You have a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction knowing that you completed something with effort. When plagiarizing we don't get that feeling because deep down we all know it is wrong.

Plagiarism is a serious matter. By doing it you can only hurt yourself. If you plagiarize and get caught you will receive a zero for that assignment, and a zero is incredibly hard to bring up. If you have an A it will drop your grade down to a C. Even though plagiarizing is really easy with today’s technology, it is still wrong. You are taking someone else’s work and putting as your own, which is not right. A person probably worked very hard to right their own 5 page essay. They had to do research, type it all up, and site everything. This could have taken someone one week to do, but it only took you a minute to make it your own. Do you think that is fair? I don’t…

I think everyone can agree that plagiarism is a very serious issue. Not only does it hurt your grade, it hurts yourself just like Mike said earlier. When people plagiarize, they do it because mostly they are just lazy and don't want to make the time to do their own work. But, the other half of the time people do it because they think it makes their work much better. It can sound better and look better. However; what people don't realize is that you can get caught very easily by how much you plagiarize. At times, it can seem very obvious, but it's not only that, it gets you into so much trouble. You get the zero, then you get the call home and visit to the guidance. Nobody likes that, and parents hate it too. But once you start plagiarizing, it suddenly becomes a habit that picks up as you get older, and no college professor accepts plagiarism at anytime.

Plagiarism is not something that should be done. It is an act that demotes you as a person, not only in the eyes of your teachers and parents, but in your peers. I agree with Mike Russo that plagiarizing will cause teachers to lose trust and respect in you. And it won't be just the teacher whose class you cheated in. Other teachers have said in their opening speeches that they communicate between classes and at meetings, and discussions about plagiarism, or even bad behavior in general, come up and will turn all your teachers wary to your assignments.
Plagiarism is only hurting yourself, as a student. Your grades drop significantly with the inclusion of a zero to your average. Also, your parents get an uncomfortable call from your teacher, which will usually result in severe punishment. You do not learn anything from plagiarizing, and you come out from that experience even worse than when you entered which ever predicament led you to this conclusion.
Today's technology makes it incredibly easy to plagiarize a paper. Surf the web, find a suitable essay or information page on the topic, highlight, right click, copy, paste, thesaurus for some words that are a little lengthy, save, print... zero. While it seems like an easy way to get an A (ha ha, that rhymes... oops, off topic), plagiarizing ends the same way every time: zero, zero, zero. Plagiarizing is a bad idea, and if you find yourself in this position, just take the smarter, better choice, and tell the truth and explain your situation to your teacher.

I agree with everyone who comments that plagiarism is a very serious issue and is not worth it at all because of the punishments and disappointment. Another important point, I think, of plagiarism is that although one may not feel confident about his/her own work, it's better than using another person's words and thoughts. We are not just given assignments by teachers as something to do in our free time and as something to complain about and gain character from, like some parents say, but as something else entirely we don't sometimes take into account. Assignments and papers are meant to be mentally stimulating and something that challenges us to have our own opinion and gives our voice an outlet to be free to use what is given to create something original; something that gives a part of ourselves. At least for me, every word I type or hand write down is my own. People don't realize in their laziness and unorganized schedules is that when they give up doing an assignment, they are giving up a challenge and a way to create and share thoughts of their own. Plagiarism is such a tempting thing that one can be thankful that all possibility of it being possible are taken away with the use of websites like turnitin.com and observant teachers like Mr. Moccia. I may seem like a goody-two-shoes for saying that but at least I don't give up before I try, right?

plagiarism is flat out wrong. the only person who gets hurt you. not the person who you compied from, but yourself. in all honesty, what are you trying to acomplish? that you can copy and pase with the click of a mouse? its just a terrible thing to do and there is no positives. i dpnt think plagiarism will be a serious issue in this class though. we all seem like talented young adults who dont need help from another website to get A's. but in other places it could be a lot worse because people may not be as "talented" as us. i dont want to seem mean but its the truth

I think there is no argument the plagiarism is a big issue. As mrusso said "the only person you are hurting is yourself". Theres no need to think twice about is wrong and doesn't help you in anyway. Even if you don't get caught plagiarizing once, you are going to get caught eventually. Plagiarizing just becomes a habit and you become dependent on it. It's not just a problem in English classes, it is a problem wide spread throughout the school. In every class and every subject there is always the chance that there is somebody that is going to plagiarize and get away with it. I hope that that this wont be an issue with our honors English class because we all seem like honest people.

When people plagiarize, it only hurts you. When you plagiarize, it puts your learning back because you’re a not challenging yourself. It shows that you do not want to do the work that is put in front of you, and you are taking the easy way out. Also, your taking someone else’s papers, and hard work, and putting your name on it; it’s unfair to the original writer. It also reflects on your character when you plagiarize. The only way I see plagiarism not being a serious issue is if you are unaware that you are doing it. This would mean that you would take facts from a website, maybe forgetting to site it, and putting it into the paper. If you get caught plagiarizing, you will receive a 0 and if you did the paper yourself getting a 50 would be better. The only person that’s being hurt by your plagiarizing, is you and in other words, plagiarism is not worth it.

Plagiarism is a very serious issue that is affecting many schools across the country. kids think that they can get away with stealing somebody's work. However, as teachers become more aware of the situation, they are doing more to stop this growing problem. They are coming up with programs like turnitin.com and are telling the students what a bad idea it is.I agree with the teachers that kids should be punished if they do it. Plagiarism is a bad thing all around. It doesn't help you grow in your writing, and it's stealing. You wouldn't steal someone's TV. Plagiarism is like the same thing. Also you may think that you are getting a better grade and sounding smarter than usual, but it's just the opposite. You will probably get caught get a zero, wich is so much worse than any grade no matter how bad of a writer you are. Also, you look silly copying someone elses work. Plagiarism isn't something you can blame on something small. If you don't have enough time to do something and just copy and paste, that isn't going to work as an excuse. Also, I agree with Emma when she said "they are giving up a challenge and a way to create and share thoughts of their own". She is right, people should try to be more creative in their work and think for themselves instead of mindlessly going through the work just to get it done. if you have a problem, talk to the teacher, they will probably help you , which is what they are there for. Even though it seems easy to plagiarise and you think you can get away, think again. Plagiarism may look like a friend, but it is an enemy.

Celia said...

When someone choses to plagiarise, they are just taking the lazy way out. Plagiarism is wrong and no student should be lazy enough to do it. Even if getting a zero on the assignment or getting a call home isn't bad enough, you lose the respect of all of your peers and teachers. It would be better to not have enough time to do an assignment and get a bad grade on it then to plagiarise and get a zero. The student should never even think about plagiarising, and should first ask the teacher if he/she could get an extention on the assignment. Also if you ever get away with plagiarism, you should have a conscience to tell you that someone worked very hard to make the assignment and you are just taking five minutes to copy and paste it. Plagiarism is wrong and no good student should ever plagiarise.

Plagiarism is not something you want to do. Some people may think they are getting off easy by copying the internet or someone's previous work, but really, they are causing themselves more stress than they would have had if they did the assignment the fair way in the first place. Thinking your teacher would never find out about your wrongdoing would not be a good assumption. There are many resources a teacher can use to check, and once they have found you plagiarizing, there is not way out. The first time you are caught, you get a 0 on the assignment and a call home to your parents. The second time you are caught, you get a 0 for the marking period and a call home again. These are the written penalties. However, they do stretch beyond this. You are going to lose the respect and trust in your peers, teachers, and maybe even your parents as Celia said before. If you plan ahead and use your time wisely, there is no need for plagiarism. If there is a problem, you can easily contact your teacher, instead of putting your entire grade at stake. So before you plagiarize a paper, stop and think to yourself, is it really worth it?

Plagiarizing is something you should avoid doing. It is not helping you, it is only hurting you. When you are plagiarizing you are copying someone else's work. This work was meant to be done by you and doing it only helps you become a better student. It may be easy to do but you can also get caught easily and the consequences aren't worth it.
If you plagiarize, and get caught, your first punishment is receiving a 0 on that assignment. getting a 0 on anything can bring down your grade dramatically. Also, you may get a call home. From this time on, your teacher and parents will have to watch you more carefully and you will not be as trusted as you were before. Not doing work because you are too lazy or want a good grade is no excuse. Getting a good grade from work that is not yours wouldn't feel as good as getting a good grade from work that is yours. It's your choice weather you want to plagiarize or not, but if you are smart you would make the better decision and not do it.

Plagiarism is definitely cheating. It's cheating your assignment, your class, your teacher, and most importantly YOU. If you plagiarize, you will never learn what your teacher expects you to and as a result you don't do as well in your class. Moreover, you will almost always get caught so what's the point? You know that you're going to get in trouble so why not just stop being lazy and do your own work. Plagiarizing is taking credit for someone else's work, and it does hurt someone. YOU.

mriposta said...

I think that plagiarism is a serious issue because it is something that can affect you in a big way. Copy and pasting someone else's work seems too simple to have such serious consequences but it's really not worth it. Not only is plagiarizing dishonest, but doing so causes your teacher to lose respect for you. You receive a 0 on the assignment, your parents get involved, and eventually so does guidance all because you were either too lazy to do the work or too afraid of receiving a bad grade for your own work. Plagiarizing is also disrespectful to the original author and to your teacher for not putting in the time and effort to write something yourself. Plagiarism is an issue that should be taken very seriously.

ctino said...

It is apparent that the unanimous decision based on all of the comments is that plagiarism is a serious issue. Not only are you copying another person's work, but labeling it as your own. I believe that Mmiller makes a very true point. You wouldn't steal someone's TV, so why would you steal someone's paper; it is just not moral. It is obvious that you are only hurting yourself. Not only do you get a zero, but accompanying that punishment is a call home. Instead of resorting to plagiarism, you could have tried your best and worked hard. Even if you got a C, it would have been a heck of a lot better than a zero. That single zero can impact your grade dramatically.

Punishments and discipline are only the beginning of the consequences of plagiarism. Teachers and students alike look at you in a different, and you are judged by just a few misguided clicks of the mouse. You will find that you are not viewed as a hardworking student, but a lazy cheater. Although all it took was a copy/paste, the views and looks you get from your peers in school will be altered for the worst. In the end, teachers will catch you, so just don't even try.

Plagiarism isn't something that should be taken lightly. When someone decides to take someone elses work and use it as their own they deserve whatever consequences that come their way. In the long run its always a better idea just to do the work rather than get caught and deal with the punishment. There's always a reason behind why a teacher makes students do a certain essay or assignment. By skipping out on it they are not only plagarizing but they could be missing out on an important concept. One plagarized essay could mean being completly lost in a weeks worth of class discussion. This all effects the students grade in the class. Even doing poorly on an assignment and getting a 60% would be alot better than recieving a 0% for taking someone elses work. The simple thing to do is just to do your own work.

CConklin said...

Plagiarism is a serious issue with serious consequences as well. When someone copies someone else's work, they are learning nothing and only hurting themselves. Not only do you recieve a "0" for the assignment, but you also disappoint your parents and teachers. You can also get a bad reputation. There may never be an end to plagiarism, but with websites such as turnitin.com there may be less and less of it everyday. Bottom line is, no one should plagiarize because the results are never good.

Plagiarism is nothing more than a way of showing that either you don't care enough about the subject ,or you don't have the common decency to come up with origanal work of your own. Instead you steal the work of others and put you name on it. If you ever got caught not only would you get a 0 on the paper and a call home, but the teacher would also think alot less of you and may treat you a bit differently than before. Also any other people who may find out about your plagiarism will think less of you and may take that extra time looking over that essay you just turned in or that open ended test. Most of all people just all-out lose their trust and respect for you; if you can't do your own work and are willinf to lie about that who says you wont lie about other things. Plagiarism is not worth the minute chance that you get away with it compaired to the more likely outcome of you getting caught and being in trouble.

ablanc said...

Plagerizing is definately not worth it. Like what "mrusso" said, you're only hurting yourself. When your parents find out, not only will they be extremely dissapointed in you, there will probably other consequences as well. You lose the trust of the teachers, and trust is a very valuable thing these days. After all, people have no reason not to trust you until you break it. By plagerizing, you are breaking this trust and therefore hurting yourself in the long-run.

SBedrosian said...

People may feel the need to plagiarize if they do not feel confident in their own work or they are simply too lazy to do the work themselves. A lot of the time, people feel as though what they have written isn't good enough and someone else's words sound better. Whether this is true or not, it does not make it right to plagiarize. Plagiarism is not worth the consequences when you get caught. Plagiarism is wrong. That is the bottom line. There is no excuse or valid reason for plagiarizing because it isn't right.
