Characterizing

As we begin the play, it is important to characterize the main characters. (“Characterize” definition: to describe the main characteristics of a person; although this may include important physical traits, it also includes important interior traits or personalities.) Take a moment to characterize one or more of the following: Othello, Iago, or Desdemona.

Characterizing is a very important part of understanding a story. If you understand the characters and their personalities, then the story becomes a lot clearer. You can understand what the characters are doing, and why they are doing that. Shakespear's characters have a lot to do with what is happening or going to happen in the story.

In Othello, the main character is Othello. He is a very complex character. He is a very nice and kind person. When he is questioned about how and why he married Desdimona, he didn't get angry. He explained the truth. It showed that he loves Desdimona and that he doesn't care what everyone else thinks. He is portrayed as a very compassionate and kind person in that scene. However, he is also a war general. This means that he has to be very merciless and mean. So he has two very different sides to him. If those two sides switch or blend together, then he and the people around him are headed for trouble.

Desdimona is another character, and she is extremely underestimated. Everyone thinks that she is a typical woman, and can't do anything for herself and is unintelligent. However, she is the complete opposite. She is very strong and very educated. When they ask her questions in court, she stands up boldly, and supports her husband, Othello. She even asks to go to the war with him! So she is a completely different person than what everyone else thinks. I think that she will eventually prove everyone wrong and show them what she is truely like.

Othello: Othello is a noble in service of the Venetian State. He is the protagonist in the play. Othello seems to be well respected and powerful in the eyes of those around him. On the outside he seems to be very confident and sure of himself but he is actually very insecure about his age and race. Othello, being the only black man, is seen differently than everyone else. Although he is successful and respected it does not change his color and this makes him insecure and therefore vulnerable. Othello has certain moments where he seems naive. This takes away from any sophistication he may have shown earlier in the story.

In Shakespeare's Othello, many different types of character's are present. Most of which can be summed up into a short, general statement. For instance, Othello is a virtuous and kind warrior, and Desdemona is an outgoing and self-sufficient woman. However one character, Iago, is much more complex than a single statement could describe. Iago has many traits that define his actions and reveal his personality. The most general thing that could describe him is that he will do whatever he has to in order to advance his own motives.

In order to accomplish his goals, Iago is willing to manipulate and lie to everyone around him. He is so proficient in his trade of deception that he is often referred to as honest Iago. He appears to have forsaken anything that resembles a conscience, thus allowing him to proceed unrestrained when ruining lives. His life style is similar to a modern day con artist. He sells himself as a reliable friend with good advice, and then is quick to take great profit in your folly. Iago is also very quick witted. He can think of brilliant excuses on the fly, and is great at covering up his position as a double agent. Iago was able to harness all of the advantages of his personal traits to become the ultimate manipulator.

Characterizing is important, not only because it helps show the characters true nature, but also because it gives a better insight to the story. Desdemona, like Michelle said, is very underestimated. Since this is a time period when women are considered inferior, she is not considered to be the equal of her husband by anyone but him, as shownin the court scene. Desdemona is a proud, educated and intelligent woman who knows what she wants and how to achieve it in her day and age. She is also a caring and loving wife and person in general. She most likely will shock everyone once she really lets her true self shine later in the play.

Othello is the main character of the play. He is a moor, or African-American. Although a man of his descent would usually be disregarded in society at the time of this play, Othello is a highly respected Italian general. He is a very powerful figure, and a great military commander. Othello marries Barbantio's daughter, Desdemona, which presents a few problems. First off, there is a very significant age and racial difference. Othello is much older which makes it look to Barbantio that he is taking advantage of Desdemona, but Desdemona truly admires Othello and wanted to marry him. Othello is said to be a very trusting man; he trusts people very easily which makes him easy to take advantage of, which Iago plans to do. Othello is insecure about his skin color since he is much different than all of the people around him which makes him vulnerable.

Othello is the main character of the play, also named ‘Othello.’ Othello is a moor, meaning he has dark skin. He is the military leader of the forces of Venice, and was chosen so because of the fact that he is of another land, where there are different strategies of battle, which encourages diversity in the soldiers’ attack styles. He is a kind and reasonable person, not expressing anger when questioned about his marriage to Desdemona. He is an experienced character who has seen many hardships in his life.

Iago is a very devious character. He pretends to like Othello, but he really hates him. And Roderigo knows this and pays Iago to set him up with Desdamona, who is Othello's wife. However, Roderigo did not know the two were married and paid Iago anyway. But Iago did know of this and took the money anyway. This shows us that the only thing Iago is after s money. He is more concerned with riches than he his with keepig his friendships. He is nota trustworthy person and is the main antagonist in the story.

I think that characterizing helps everyone understand the story better. You might think you know a lot about a certain character but when you go into deeper meanings of their actions you can see what they are really like. In Othello, three characters that I believe are very important are Othello, Desdemona, and Iago. Othello is referred to as a moor and he is a general of the Venice armies. He is very well respected but everyone even though he is a black man in white society. He is married to Desdemona, who is loved by Roderigo. Desdemona is the daughter of a Venetian senator. She was secretly married to Othello before the play begins. She is a strong woman who can stand up for her marriage. Lastly, Iago is the villain in this play, he is manipulative and dishonest. His job is to assist Othello. Othello thinks that Iago is his best friend but Iago is really scheming to Take Desdemona away from Othello and give her to Rogerigo.

When you’re reading a story, it is very important to understand the main characters. Othello, as told in the story, is a Moore. He is also a very high power military general making him important to the city and well respected. He is middle aged, and he is almost easily taken advantage of by Iago. Othello fell in love with Desdemona, who is a wealthy white woman. He also is a very calm, well spoken man. He is honest and not afraid of telling the truth. Othello is key to the play and is important to understand fully.

Iago:
Iago is a man who use to be Othello's best friend. However, after Othello "betrayed" Iago by choosing Cassio as his lieutenant, Iago starts to despise Othello. He develops the personality of a sneaky deceiving man. He is portrayed as a man devoted to Othello by being somewhat of a servant, but behind his back he is secretly helping out Roderigo. He is being payed to help Roderigo win Desdemona over.
Iago is not as good a man as Othello thought he was. He believes that Othello is a cruel and deceiving man, so he jumps on any chance to hurt him in any way shape or form. Iago is not the kindest man and certainly not the most trustworthy.

In the play Othello, characterizing becomes a very important skill for us in order to truly understand the plot. Dramatic irony allows us to already begin to understand a character's personality in advance. Iago becomes an essential character in the play. This character is imperative to understand.

Iago is already characterized by dramatic irony as a villian. He is a very decieving and evil man. He seems to be fooling and lying to every character he has encountered. Iago is the antagonist in the play Othello. Through his actions, Iago is portrayed as an untrustworthy and heartless man. Exacting his revenge based on suspicion, Iago attempts to hurt Othello and Cassio as well as decieve Roderigo for money. Iago can also be seen as a man who easily loses trust in others. Based on a hunch that his wife was cheating on him with Othello and Cassio, Iago attempts to get revenge on both. He has no proof and easily loses faith in the both of them. He also has no respect for Cassio, believing that he has no military skill and doesn't deserve to be Othello's officer.

Characterizing is an important part of reading a story, and helps you to understand the characters better. Othello is the main character in Othello. He is a kind-hearted warrior who means no harm to Desdemona's father or the community. He is a moor, which is very important in this story. If Othello wasn't a moor, then the story would be completely different because there would be no dispute about Desdemona marrying him.
Desdemona is Othello's love. She is independent and kind. She stands up for her husband in court, which shows that she does not care what other people think about her. In most other plays of this time period, females were shown to be weak and dependent on males, but the character of Desdemona really takes that generalization away. This is because Desdemona is just as selfsufficiant and independent as many other MALE characters in other plays.

In the first two acts, many characters were presented to the reader. It is very important for the reader to know more about the characters in the play in order to fully understand what is going on. One of the first few characters to be presented in the story is Iago. Iago is the villain in the story because of his evil plans that he generates against the people he convinces are his friends. He tricks people into doing things that will in the end help only him, and he lies whenever it works out well for him. In the play, Iago shows his two faces as he pretends to be supporting Othello and as he tries to convince Roderigo that he is not just using him to get money. Iago is very jealous of Cassio, Othello's lieutenant, because he felt that he was the better person for the position. Iago is overall a very deceitful man that lies and tricks people for his own wellbeing.

Characterizing is very important to help the reader have a better understanding of the story. One of the characters in the play Othello is Othello himself. Othello, in the play, is said to be a moor, or better known as an African American. Othello is very kind and is self-sacrificing. When they brought him to questioning with Desdemona's father, they asked him why he was married to her. He told them the truth and that shows he would do anything for his love for Desdemona. He did not care what others would do or say to him. Iago, however, is the opposite of Othello. Iago is a villain in the play. He is willing to pay people to get Desdemona to marry him. Even if she does not love him as he loves her. It is cruel, and he is definitely the antagonist of the story.

Everyone characterizes in different ways. It is good to have a definition for every character because it helps you understand what you are reading better. One of the main characters in Othello is Othello. Othello is a very understanding and trustworthy man. He is someone that isn't afraid to take an insult and fights for the people he loves. Othello is physically and mentally strong and understands the difference between what is worth fighting for and what is better left behind.

Desdemonia is another main character in Othello. Desdemonia is someone who isn't afraid to have her own opinions and can stand up for what she believes is meant to be. She is also very kind but isn't afraid to say what she is thinking. Desdemonia is very pretty and has a strong personality. Most people think of Desdemonia as a very shy girl who doesn't know who she really is but really she is not that at all.

In the story Othello, the main character Iago is one of the most complex characters in the book. Iago is two-faced while he pretends to be both friends with Othello and Roderigo. Iago uses these friendships against eachother while he gets money from Roderigo and tries to get Othello in trouble. Another characteristic of Iago is that he is that he is a gifted liar. When Roderigo believes Iago was just taking his money without helping him get Desdemona, Iago is able to come up with a story that gets Roderigo to side with him and get him mad at Othello. Iago can lie easily to anyone.

Characterizing helps the reader understand more about the main character in the book. It gives them a better view of the character, what they're like, and helps interpret them into the plot.
Othello, physically, is a tall and not very handsome black man. He is strong and is very intimidating towards others. Othello walks tall and his personality forms his physical image.
Othello is a very brave man. He has to be in order to be an army leader. He also is not afraid to brag about his expierences, as well as his so called journeys.
Othello, as the main character, is supposed to be a good soled person, as well as someone that is looked up to by the citizens. He is smart, intelligent , and makes very wise decsions. Othello is known in his town as well as the surrounding ones.
Characterization of Othello helps form a mental image and character trait list. It helps the reader understand the book and the characters a lot better .

Othello: Othello is the protagonist of this story. He is very patient. When he is irrationally accused of tricking Desdemona into marrying him, he doesn't get angry, he calmly explains that this is not the case. He is also honorable and brave. Othello is an army general and goes on many dangerous missions. This is actually part of the reason Desdemona loves him. Although people respect Othello because of his army rank, he is not completely accepted because of his race. He is one of the kinder characters.

For some characters it may take us a while to understand them. For others, you know exactly what type of person they are right away. This is called characterizing. Othello, the main character of Shakespeare's play, is a strong and brave moor. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, which is his true love for Desdemona. Both Othello and Desdemona show that they really are in love with eachother, even when Desdemona's father accuses Othello for using black magic on his daughter. These important interior traits give us a better understanding of the characters, which gives us a better understanding of this play.

It is critical to characterize when one is trying to dissect a story, especially when examining points of view and perspective of events in a story. This can be shown in the characterization of Othello in Shakespeare's Othello. Othello is a venetian general that had fallen in love with Desdemona, to whom he had secretly married. He is described as a moor, and that is the only significant physical description. In being physically separate from the rest of venetian society, he is treated lesser than others, although still being held in reasonable respects. His personality and inner attributes are more complex. Othello is completely faithful to his wife, enough so that they both wish to go to war together. He is also very kind, though being a war general. Othello's characterization opens up the audiences insight into his perspective and point of view in all subject matter in the play Othello.

Iago is the antagonist of the story. As Sydney said Iago was once Othello's good friend, untill he chose Cassio over Iago as his lieutenant. Now Iago is a devious man with a "hidden agenda". He is determined to help Roderigo get Desdimona, but only because Desdimona is Othello's wife. In the story, Iago shows no remorse for his acts. He only cares about ruining Othello, nothing else. But to Othello's face, Iago pretends to be his friend. Iago is a complex vilain the lies and plots to hurt Othello.

Characterizing helps discover more about the important characters in the book. Even though Desdemona hasn't had a lot of lines so far in the story, she is an important character. We know from what other characters have described that Desdemona is a pretty lady who is the daughter of Brabantio. She is deeply in love with Othello and a lot of people don't like that which makes her kind of rebellious or daring. She is not afraid what other people think. We know that she is a very caring person also in the way that she listened to Othello's stories of his childhood and earlier life. Although we know some of these important things about Desdemona, I think there is far more to learn about her later on in the story.

Desdemona is a devoted wife the Othello. She is loyal to him above anyone else. Desdemona is not a typical wife of that time period. She is highly intelligent and her opinion counts for almost as much as Othello's.

Iago is evil. His plan to get Cassio fired and for himself to become Othello's lieutenant hurts alot of other people, just so he can get what he wants. First, Othello is hurt because he thinks that his wife is cheating on him. Cassio and Desdemona are hurt because Othello probably wants to kill them. Roderigo is hurt because Iago took all of his money and he will probably never get Desdemona. Iago is a very self-centered and evil person.
