Fate

In the modern world, we tend not to think about fate or the gods having a hand in our destinies. It is a very American idea to think we have full control over our lives and futures. However, even though we may not believe that there are gods on Mount Olympus controlling us, there are many things about our lives that are outside of our control. Explore one of these things. What about your life, present condition, or future is outside of your control?

In certain aspects of our life, there are things that are beyond our control despite the multiple things that we are able to control. In America, we are in charge of our future and goals, but there are in comparison, still things we can't prevent or make happen. One of these things is our age. Every year, we increase a year in age and we are not able to change that fact. We cannot control the weather. That is a natural occurrence that will take place despite our efforts to control it.

Another aspect of life that we cannot control is death. Everyone will die eventually and no one has immortality. In comparison, we can attempt to live healthier lives and stay active in order to live longer. A last example of something in our life that is beyond our control is the seasons. We are not able to control when the seasons change, they all just occur according to nature. In the end, despite the fact that we can control the present and future of our lives here in America, there are some things that are beyond everyone's control.

There are many things about our lives that are outside of our control. One example is our family. You cannot change the family you were born into or gain new family members unless they're blood related. No matter how annoying or weird our families are, we can't control who we're stuck with for the rest of our lives. Another thing that is outside of our control is death, like Caroline said. We cannot control when we die or the circumstances of our deaths, we just have to live life day by day knowing that we could live another 50 or so years, or we could die tomorrow. Everybody dies at some point, but we cannot decide when. One more thing that is out of our control is weather. We can't make it a certain temperature outside or decide when it rains or snows. Weather is and always will be out of our reach.

In all of our lives, there are most definitely many things that are beyond our control. We all first think that we are always in control of everything that happens to us and everything we go through. However; we never really stop to think about how much we can't technically control.
The things that have already happened, our past, we cannot control. As much as we all would like to go back and change something we have done, we can't.
Another thing we cannot control is fate itself. Everything happens for a reason, and even if we don't want some things to happen, we can only control that for a period of time. We do the things we do and we meet the people we meet for a purpose. We cannot control other people as well. We have to let everyone control themselves.

Even though most Americans think that we have total control of our destinies, there are some things that are totally out of our hands. One example of something out of our control is the things happening in the universe such as a meteor heading towards planet Earth. We cannot control if a meteor hits Earth or not. We do have advanced technology that may tell us that something is heading our way, but we wouldn't be able to do anything about it. So what if we knew that it was coming? We could try to hid and escape it, but once it hit the Earth then you would most likely die no matter where you were. If a meteor did come crashing into Earth, it would cause most, if not all, of us to die. This is also something that you cannot control. Everyone dies eventually by something. Life is like a roller coaster ride, and we can't control things like death and what happens in the universe and how it affects us. A really great quote is, "You can't fight fate. Whatever happens, happens" (Unknown).

I agree with Caroline and Mary that how and when you die is mostly out of your control. However, they way you act can affect that. If you are in the military, you chance of death increases significantly than from being an office worker. Also, your diet affects it. If you eat lots of McDonalds, and hardly any healthy foods, it increases you chance of health related problems(type 2 diabetes, etc.). The most control you can have over you death is suicide, which is not a good idea (don't try this at home). Besides those few things, death is one of many things in you life that you can't control.

There are many things that happen in our lives that are out of our control. For example, death without human interference is out of our control and other people's decisions are out of our control. Some people think that fate doesn't exist, but think it does. I believe that everything happens for a reason. In a Christian’s point-of-view everything is because of God's Will. God has our whole lives set up for us; all we have to do is follow his path to get there. Someone else might think that we can control everything, but that isn't true.

One thing that no one can control is other people. We might be able to help them decide on something but they decide the final decision. Parents help their kids make right decisions but parents aren’t going to be with their kids every second of everyday telling them what to do. They will have to decide for themselves based on what they think is right and wrong. Some people might be followers and do everything that their "friend" tells them to do but in the end the follower will stop taking orders and control their own life. Some aspects of our future are out of our control but others we have complete power over.

I agree with Michael with "the way you act can affect (things that are out of your control)". For instance, the way your body acts. If one were to become overweight from eating too much, then its not your body's fault you could get sick and be more susceptible to heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. Another example is how others think and act. You cant control the thoughts and actions of others, but if you are really nice and friendly to them, then they are going to think better of you, even if they dont realize it. If you are mean and rude, then they are automatically going to want to stay away from you. You cant blame them for being mean to you because you might have played a part in it.
As cool as it would be to know our futures, it might get pretty boring after a while. Knowing whats going to happen everytime before it does will take the ups and downs out of life, and those are what make life worth living. Maybe its better to have some things out of our control, and see where the road takes us.

In America, it is true that we believe we have full control over our lives and our futures. We live in a country that allows us to set high goals and do the many things it takes to fulfill them. Although some things do remain within our power to control, many other things do not. Some of the more obvious conditions we cannot change are things like time and aging or the weather like ctino said earlier.

Some other conditions we do not have control over are our families and where and when we are born. We don not have the power to choose who our parents are or when we want to be brought into the world. In contrast to that point, we have no control over when we will die (disregarding suicide). At some point everyone's life ends. One last thing that we don't have control over are other people's actions and decisions. We don't have the power to make choices for other people. It is something that is out of our control. Sometimes these things make people feel powerless but there are many things that we do have control over that are important.

In our lives, there are numerous things that we can't control. One of them would be our emotions. We have control over how well we conceal our emotions, but we can't refuse to feel happy, or angry. Well, technically, we can. But it never REALLY works. Deep down we know how we feel. It's just the way we are. We can't stop ourselves from how we feel. It's uncontrollable!

Rachel P. said...

Another thing that we can't control would be other people. We can't control other peoples emotions, decisions, actions, reactions, how they feel about you, ect. Although we can influence them, we will never have complete control over another person. If someone doesn't like you, you can't FORCE them to like you. The same can be said with how they behave. You can't change someone's personality, just like no one can change yours. You can't stop someone from crashing into you car as a result from drinking. It's not possible. Everyone is different and we can't control people.

In this world, there are a vast number of things that we are unable to control. The weather, your family, the seasons, among others. But to the Ancient Greeks, Mount Olympus and the Gods were as real as the earth beneath our feet. They believed that there were immortals that controlled the skies, the ocean, and the underworld. The Oracle of Delphi predicted your future, and it would come about no matter what you tried. They believed that fate was the ultimate power, and that you couldn’t escape.

In our time, Americans hear the word “fate” and think: “What a bunch of bologna.” There are things in this world that we cannot control, including our family, the weather, the seasons, etc. We cannot control which family we are born into, we just accept it. We cannot change the weather, it just happens (and changes and ruins our Saturday plans) (and the weather reporters still get paid the big bucks…).We can’t control the seasons. The earth revolves, spinning crooked, we freeze walking to school and get a cold. We can’t control how the earth will change and move, bubble and burst. We cannot control this world, it has a mind of its own.

There are certain things in life we have no control over. Some people in the world like to think they have complete control over everything, however, it is not true. Like multiple people have said before, you can not control when you are going to die. Death is a natural process. One thing you can control though is keeping yourself healthy which at times, may keep you from death. Another thing we can not control is what actions people we associate with are going to take. For example, I can not control my friend if tomorrow they randomly came up to me and started talking to me. I had no control over my friend coming over to me and no control over what they are saying to me. All of these proves that in the modern world, humans have no control over certain aspects of life.

Fate, in my opinion is just another creation of the human mind to help explain why things happen, because it is human nature to find a reason for everything and if they can not they tend to make something up to satisfy their primal instincts. Everything has a logical explaination. Life is, to put it simply, a chain of causes and effects. I agree with Caroline in the fact that no man can live forever yet. As for controlling death, you do it on a daily basis. Such as when you do some activities you must sign a waiver, which says you are aware that you may die in this activity; thus you may very well have chose your death and you are aware of it. Nothing is truely uncontrollable in your life, some things are just easier to control than others.

There are many things in this life which are out of our control. A major thing that is out of our control is death. We have no control or idea of when we'll die. Also we cannot control other people's thoughts or actions. If we had control over other people's free will, this world would be crazy. People have also tried to control the weather but that is another thing that will always be out of our control. Another thing out of our control is time. Time is a constant thing that cannot be slowed down or sped up. There have been many attempts at time machines but all of them have failed.

Even though we do not believe in fate as much as we did in the past, it still controls a good part of our lives. We have the ability to change our future, but somethings our out of our hands. For example, we don't have any control over when or how we die, and what type of house or family we grow up with. Some people get more chances for the future if they are rich, while as others who grow up in poor, dangerous places have a harder time getting a good education. Another way fate affects us is if we have special needs or not. People have no control over if they are or aren't going to be born with special needs. If we did, then no one would have to be born with it. Fate affects a decent part of our lives, even if we don't believe in it as much as our relatives.

Although there are many things that people control in their own lives like what they do for a living and everyday choices, there are other things that aren't under our own control. These are things like the family we were born into, when we were born, when and how we will die, and health. You could be a complete health freak and wash your hands all the time and take all the right vitamins and sometimes you'll still end up being sick. People can do as much as they can to prevent things, but sometimes like when someone gets a cold its not prevantable. I dont know whether things like this or things that are a bit deeper like death and family are consiered fate or if everything happens at random, but whatever it may be is beyond human control.

It's very interesting to see the difference in people's ideas connect and collide. In one way, we have a lot of control over our own lives and paths of life. We can decide whether we want to be ambitious and strive for a leadership position, or just go with the flow and get a regular job that will most likely keep us unsatisfied for a very, very long period of our lives. Thinking about it, it all has to do with out our own will.
Sure, there can be very large obstacles to getting what you truly want, but if you really, really want them, you can achieve it. Take for example someone who doesn't have legs but wants to be a runner. Others created things that helped to run and be something great, whether 'crippled' or not. We may not have the power to change a boss's mind, but we do have a power to make the best of what we have.

there are many things in our life today that is out of our control. for example, death. you have no idea when your going to die, or if your going to die at all. the truth is nobody knows. in todays world it seems extreme that real god would be living amung us. science or technology can never figure that out. i beleive that if you believe in something strongly enough, then it is true. weather you are jewish or christian, nobody can tell you what to believe except yourself

Different cultures believe in different things, and sometimes they are extremely different. An example of this is fate. Some cultures belive that an outside force is what determines fate. Gods were one of the big ones. If there was a plague, then the gods were punishing you. If there was a good harvest, the Gods were rewarding you. It all depended on whether you pleased the gods and they were happy with you. However, in the U.S. we believe that a person's fate is controlled by that person. They can live their life however they want and make any changes that they want to their lives. However, this isn't entirely true.

There are many outside forces that can determine your fate. One outside force is when you are born. Nobody can control where they are born, yet it had a large impact on your fate. If you were born in the 1800s, then you will have a very different life then if you were born n 2003. Your whole outlook on life will be different. You will have different values, and some things may be more important than others or ones that are more important in todays society.

For example, in the 1800s, they believed that religion was the most important thing in the world. They didn't use much money though. They traded things and didn't have much of a need for it. However, things are totally different today. Religion has faded into the backround a little, and money is the biggest part of our country. We use money every day, and withougt it, we would be totally lost. So as time goes on cultures and beliefs change.

It is naive to believe that the beholder of his or her life has complete control over everything about it. This statement is a fact, and is proven in many ways. Mortality is the most clear of any of them. Just as true as something lives, it is also true that it will die, as it is the last step to the cycle of life. This is an inescapable verity. Another part of our lives that is entirely left up to fate is our heritage, birthplace, and birth date. These are impossible to control, as one was never around to set fate into one's favor. A further uncontrollable thing is how people act around you. One may be able to slightly control this, but varying opinions accompanied with contrasting personalities will be bound to cause at least a little complication.

In our lives, sometimes we think we can control everything but this is not true. Many people set goals way too high, which is not bad, but only when it is way out of reach. Moreover, some people think they can have control over everyone around them but that is not possible. If you think you have control over everyone you will end up not even having control of yourself.

First, we cannot control are other people lives. Other people lives are not up to us, but only that person. Another part of our lives that we cannot control is jobs. Sometimes, there may be a job you really want, but you may not get. It's not up to you. But if you work hard enough, you will get the job. What is under your control is working hard and living up to your own expectations. In addition, getting sick is out of our control. You can not control when you are going to get sick or how badly. Lastly, one more thing you can not control is the weather. If you hate rainy days or snow days you have to deal with it because that is something nobody can change. Fate is fate, and whatever happens happens; learn to accept it and you will be happier.

One of the things in life that is outside of our control is who are parents are and what our background is. We do not have control over who our family. Relatives and family members are not people we chose. They are chosen for us by fate and there are reasons for who our family is.

We also cannot control the aging process of life. Death is unavoidable and so is how, when, and where we die. things that occur in nature are not things that are in the power or control of people. We can say that that fate is left up to "the gods" but we can also say its science. Americans have gotten it in their minds that everything has a mathematical or scientific reason behind it. But to the Greeks it was all up to the gods and their decisions.

SBedrosian said...

Fate and destiny go back to the super natural and "witch craft" if you will. These are things that people believed in during other time periods and in different places around the world. They believed that as humans we were not powerful enough to control our own destiny and that our final destination is out of our control. But then the whole idea of "the American dream" was established and people who came to the states believed that they could do anything and be anything. They thought that they controlled every aspect of their lives and this is how most Americans feel today. Obviously there are things that are far our of everyones control such as the weather but in todays day in age we can "control" that by going somewhere that fits our weather preference. So many things can be temporarily modified or changed in this life because of our technology in all fields that not much is "out of our control" if we have access to our resources.

CConklin said...

In our lives, there are many things that happen because of choices we have made. However, there are many things in our life that we just simply have no control over. One of these things are death. It's very unfortunate when someone dies, but it is just part of nature and there is usually nothing we can do about it. Other things that we have absolutely no control over is whose children we are, or the year we're born, or even everyday things such as weather. These are all natural occurences. We get no say in how old we are, or who we want our parents to be. They all just happen and everysingle one of them are something we have no control over yet have to live with all the time.
