The Purpose of Writing

In your own words, define the purpose of writing. [Think of writing as intended, at least in some part, to be read by an audience.] Defend your definition. Also, feel free to respond to other students’ definitions.

The purpose of writing can be answered in many different ways. In my opinion, the purpose for writing is to entertain and persuade your audience.

Sometimes we write to express our feelings and to get away from everything else. We use it as a way to let everything go and be you, but on paper. Other times we write because we have to. However, most of the time you write, it's for an audience.

We write stories to entertain them in different ways. Stories can entertain people with knowledge, action, humor, morals, etc.

Other types of writing like essays persuade their audience. If someone writes about a book, they could be persuading them about something they want the audience to believe about that story. Also, if one is writing specifically a persuasive essay, it could be about how they would rather have school end earlier than later.
These types of essays are to persuade the audience into thinking just like the writer.

Therefore, writing is for the purpose of persuasion and entertainment, in my opinion.

Writing has many different purposes. Some societies have different purposes then others. However, there is one main purpose that all people use it for. Many different cultures use writing for recording things. Statistics and stories are ways that people use writing. Although there is that unifying purpose, there are many others as well.

Writing can be used as a form of entertainment, and it can be used as a way to express your feelings. For example, reading books are fun. People all around the world like to read them. So they are a favorite pasttime. Expressing your feelings is another way that writing is important. For example, in animal farm, the animals represent people. The writer was too shy or scared to express their feelings, so they use stories.

The last thing writing is important for is "to get away from everthing else" (shuber). Many people write to enjoy themsleves and leave all the stress behind and think of nothing else. I have done that multiple times. When I write I think of nothing else and I'm in my own little world. It's useful if you're under a lot of pressure and stress. So writing is a good thing for society, and it can be a way for you to escape reality for a while.

In my opinion the purpose of writing is pursuasion. Like shuber said, writing is used to get the auidence to think like the writer, and be persuaded to believe what he/she is saying. Authors write fiction books to pursuade the reader to feel what the characters are feeling. The author pursuades the reader to enjoy the story.

Also, writing is used to record information. Before the invention or written language, information was passed down orally. Each time the information was repeated, it changed a little bit.

Imagine playing a game of telephone with 20 people. The first person says "Mr. Moccia's class is the best because he is the best teacher." By the 5th person, the sentence could be changed to "Mr. Moccia's class is fantastic because he is a great teacher." By the end, the story could be changed to something like "Mr. Moccia's class is fun because we have interesting conversations."

Writing that sentence down, and physically passing it on eliminates the possible changes (intentional or not) from telling it to the next person.

Writing has many purposes, but they are all essential in our society.

Throughout the years, the purpose of writing has varied. Writing has meant different things to different people. It can be used for personal enjoyment, expression of ideas/opinions, persuasion, and communication. Often times, an author will enjoy writing as a past time, job, etc. They often have a natural talent and ability for writing, and love creating their own personal works. Going along with this thought, writing can also be a form of personal expression. Writers can lose themselves in a piece of work by expressing what is their personal thoughts. Often, a piece of the author can be found in their work.

An essential purpose of writing is persuasion. It can be connected with all of the other purposes listed above. Writers persuade the reader to listen to their ideas and opinions, be entertained, agree or disagree with their opinions, etc. Ranging from a fiction novel to an editorial, persuasion is found in all forms of writing. A last purpose of writing is communication. Writers communicate with others by showing them their ideas and opinions. As shown above, all of the purposes of writings listed above are all connected which reinforces the idea that there is no one purpose to write, but many individual ideas all linked to one another.

Writing can be looked upon in many different ways depending on who you are. The purpose of writing can be to teach a lesson, to persuade people or to simply show your own emotions. I usually write to express my emotions. One writing style I enjoy is writing in poems. Poems show whatever emotion I am feeling but puts is down on a piece of paper. This style of writing gets me almost into another world and makes me focus on what I am writing and not anything around me. It's a place where I can just be myself and write about whatever I want. When I write I can explain my life and who I am. It's a way of letting feelings out instead of keeping them building up inside.

Other people write to prove a point. For example, in class I believe someone said how President Obama writes to prove a point. Obama writes about our country and what he can to do make it a better place. Also, you can write something such as an essay for school to prove a point. For example, if you are writing an essay for math you may have to explain how you got a certain equation.

Sometimes people write to persuade others into doing something. An example would be a commercial. Commercial's try to get people to buy a certain product or watch a certain show. This style of writing is used by almost all business people.

No matter where you go there are all different styles of writing. It is everywhere and everyone uses it to communicate in some way. Writing is a different world and explains things that cannot be explained in person. Without writing our world would not be nothing like it is today.

The point of writing is to release feelings and to express yourself onto a piece of paper through poetry, short story, or any other way someone might like to write. Usually, people like to keep these writings in private because they're person. Then there are others who like to share it with other people and audiences.

Authors write stories for other people to read, and to sometimes persuade their readers to believe in their point of view. Most authors do this to express their feelings or just to simply argue a point.

Authors of childrens books express how they feel in an entertainment way. They enjoy writing to entertain others and for self-expression.

Some people are required to write, for example, speeches. The president, boss, leader, etc of anything usually lets out their feelings through speeches and then delivers them to their workers or people to show how they feel about the company, country, group, etc.

Not all people enjoy writing for an audience. I give a lot of credit to the ones that do because it takes a lot to let someone read your work. But overall, authors for audiences write for many reasons.

The purpose of writing is to express yourself in ways that you cannot do so verbally and also so that other people can get entertainment or knowledge out of your writing if your intent is for someone else to read it or hear it. Writing is away to escape everyday life and document how we feel. Whether the writing is fiction or non fiction it is a history of how we felt and what was happening in out lives at the time. It can be interpreted many different ways and can give insight into what was happening at the time.

We also write to persuade or entertain our audience through humor or suspense. Persuasive writing is usually in the form of an essay. Persuasive writing is intended to change the reader's mind, therefore, it must be more formal than a short story for example.

- The purpose of writing can generally be defined under the concept of conveying ideas. However the general category of conveying ideas can be broken down into many subcategories. These include conveying ideas to prove one's own knowledge, to bolster someone else's knowledge, and to provide entertainment. Proving knowledge is mostly seen in school. Since writing is a structured and permanent form of communication, it provides the perfect medium to assess people's knowledge and ideas. For the most part it is non debatable, and it can be looked over multiple times without accidental alterations or permutations.

-Bolstering someone else's knowledge is similar to proving one's own knowledge, however it has a few key differences. Even if one is writing about the same subject matter, they will write in a different style, for a different audience. It is like the difference between a man bragging about a car he built, and that same man telling others h ow to build a car.

- Writing to entertain pertains to the type of writing done to provide amusement. This subcategory of writing includes novels of all varieties. Although, it does not correlate with nonfictional pieces. Nonfiction deals with facts, and regardless of its entertainment value, it is a form of conveying knowledge to others. For the most part entertainment based writing has been done to earn a profit, however the internet has allowed many people to reach out to a large enough audience to justify creating and sharing entertaining fictions.

I think that the purpose of writing is to get ideas that are floating around inside your brain onto something tangiable so that you can explain what you are thinking in a clearer way. Sometimes when we have an idea in our minds, it makes complete sense to us, but when we try to explain it to someone else, we just cannot get them to see it the way we do in our heads. This is where writing comes in. It gives you the opportunity to put the words in your head onto paper so that you can arrange them to make sense.

Now that writing is very common, there are many different ways of getting your idea across to others. A very common purpose is persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is where the author has an opinion, and they try to get you to develop the same opinion by writing with strong facts.

Another purpose of writing is to provide the reader with information. Authors can do this is in a few ways. One way is to write a non fictional book telling the reader all the information they need to know in that certain topic. Another way that an author can provide the reader information is by writing a fictional story that actual gives the reader facts as they read. For example, if someone wrote about a human being teleported to another planet, they could be writing this to let the reader know about the other planets. Information writing does not have to be a book with only facts in it, it can have a fun storyline that includes facts along the way.

The purpose of writing varies on the author and the topic. When someone writes a nonfiction book, like a biography or a book about a certain event, the purpose is probably to inform the reader. The author might have a specific reason to want to teach it's reader about that topic but its most likely to help them to see it in their point of view. When someone writes it gives a great oppurtunity to tell the world what they know. Another purpose for writing, which falls more into the fiction catagory, would be to entertain. When a writer uses their imagination to create a good fiction story they are probably going to want to share it with other people for them to enjoy too. After all, thats how most good movies are created because they start off as a book.

Like we said in class, the purpose of writing in the sense of for an audience, is to inform persuade or entertain. You could be informing the audience of a historical event or about current events with the government. The entertainment aspect would just be creating something that people go to, to get away from their lives and watch someone elses. Probably the most common purpose of writing is to persuade, however. An author would write a play to try and get his thoughts and opinions across and try to persuade people into thinking like him.

Writing, when to be presented to a crowd, is always persuasive. It is intended for leaving either of three things to the audience. One of which is an idea. Many writers try to send a direct message or messages -if not, subliminal- that will leave the audience thinking of such an idea in the same light the writer would see it. Or possibly the way the writer wants the audience to see it. Personally, I call this idealistic persuasion. The next form of writing for an audience is to have a specific moral of which the audience will follow or work towards. This could also falls under a phrase that sums up the right or wrongdoing of a character. I coin this as an idiomatic persuasion. The final form is merely to project raw emotion that the audience will reflect. It does not necessarily have to have a moral behind it, the only requirement is to simply present emotion that the audience will leech on to and hold with them. These three definitions consummate what I believe is the purpose of writing.

Today writing is used to persuade, entertain, and informt. Many authors use writing to tell information they would get introuble with saying without having a hidden message. An example of this would be Animal Farm. The author would have been in trouble if he just wrote his clear thoughts, so by writing about farm animals no one could blame him for writing about communism. Another reason people write is to entertain. Story telling has been very important for a long time, so now people write their stories down so more people could hear their stories. Also, the story could not be changed like stories that people just pass on by talking. Finally, people write to persuade many people because it can spread faster and also it is easier for an audience to read then listen. If the author wrote out the story, his main arguements would be stated clearly instead of just having the people he talks to hear his opinion. As shown in all of these ways, people write because their words would be able to last forever instead of having people forget it if they tell them.

I think that there are a few purposes of writing. One purpose is to entertain people. Fiction writers make up stories to entertain their readers, from writing about things we can relate to, to writing about other worlds and dimensions. Non-fiction writers write to educate their readers. For example, a scientist might write a book on the outcomes of some of their experiments, or a psychologist might write a book about human behavior.

As a writer of fiction, I feel that writing is a way to express and create something that I have yet to experience first hand. For example, I have never experienced a deep love my characters might have or felt the mind numbing loss of a loved one. However, by creating a tragic story of someone's life, and seeing it through their eyes and know what they are feeling, I can get a glimpse of what it might be like for myself. This is the same reason I read. I want to learn about life from another point of view and see something new that I might never get to know first hand for myself. Without spending a lot of time with nonfiction, it becomes difficult to tell whether such situations are even possible, but it feels real enough while reading or writing the words. Writing is important to me, my own or not, and to many others as well. It can improve a mood or make you forget something while times are rough. Writing teaches things, and can be used as allegories as well.

The purpose of writing is solely to express your thoughts and feelings to others, without verbal expression. If you happen to entertain an audience in the process, that is just an added perk. Writing lasts forever (or at least as long as the paper does), while people will only live for a limited time. Writing allows stories and thoughts to live well beyond you.
The only issue with using writing to express things through the ages is the possibility of language changes. Your writing may just end up a decipherable mess of symbols. We will just have to ignor that possibility and continue writing.

Defining the purpose of writing could be very hard to do. There are many reasons an author rights and to pick out just one can be difficult. In my opinion, the purpose of writing is to entertain yourself (being the author) and the audience. Whenever I write, whether it be as simple as a blog or as complex as a short story, I write it not only to get a good grade, but because I enjoy it. Also when I am writing it, I write in hopes the audience or the readers will enjoy what I am writing. I feel it is important that both sides find the writing enjoyable.
